Introducing …
The Doodles are a close-knit, tiny family that consists of a single mother, a baby girl, a dog and a cat. You can find them in NYC … where they live, play and never work.
The Doodles were born roughly 6 years ago when I worked at a crisis line. I was bored … all the time. I mean, there’s only so much entertainment one can get from speaking to schizophrenics before you create your own alternate universe. My release came in the form of drawing.
I can’t say I’ve been a cartoonist or even somebody that loved to draw my entire life. It really just came from a simple suggestion. A friend (SDW – beloved co-worker) handed me some markers and said, “Here! Draw something!” … and that’s just what I did …
At first I drew random things … I started with an image of myself … a house … grass … you know, stuff you do in Kindergarten. Then I got some Crayola pencils and markers … and a sketch book … I began to draw my co-workers and that was a huge, comedic success … then a concept was born out of a conversation between my co-workers and I. The conversation led to some self reflection and the Doodle family was born to explain why it wasn’t a good idea at that particular moment in time to have a child –
I created them before I actually had a child and since I have always wanted a girl, the Doodle baby was created as a girl. Even after I had my boy, the Doodle baby remained female. Ironically, the mommy Doodle was always a single-parent … which I ended becoming myself.
I created this blog because I have yet to see a single-parent cartoon and thought that the blogosphere could use one …
The web page is purple as an homage to one of my favorite cartoon show’s ever: Harold and the Purple Crayon … Where most people have a dollar and a dream — this kid just had a crayon and an enormous imagination … If I ever write a book, I’ll dedicate it in part to this cartoon for it’s inspiration …
Introducing …
Mee Doodle – (Middle; blue dress w/ pink ruffles) She’s basically a cartoon “me” … hence her name … She’s a bit absent-minded and completely clueless about raising a baby alone. She approaches it like she does everything else — by just having fun … She loves to spend time with her tiny family and is a huge fashion aficionado …
Baybee Doodle – (bottom right; baby w/ pink bow, diaper and booties) Out of the two main characters, she’s the most responsible … she’s aware that her mother is kinda “out there” and almost always has a non-chalant, slightly nervous and non-plussed look on her face … A very serious baby, you’ll seldom catch her smiling … But, even if her face is completely void of emotion, she thoroughly enjoys spending all her time w/ her mother …
Cookee Doodle – (bottom left; black dog) Cookee Doodle is based completely on my real dog. She wasn’t the happiest puppy when Baybee Doodle came around but she’s learned to live with her and has finally stopped urinating on all of Baybee’s toys and clothes …
Tabbee Doodle – (top right; grayish cat) Tabbee Doodle – also based on my real cat really could give a shit about anyone … She’s fine so long as she’s got a nice place to sleep, some food in her plate and the dog to bother from time to time … She’s got that slight, but lovable, arrogance that most cats have … and it totally fits in perfectly w/ this family …
